Sierra Nevada College’s Poetry Center, located within Prim Library, is now open thanks to a grant awarded by the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. With the help of both the grant as well as two genereous donors, the Poetry Center contains over 4000 volumes of poetry, and is planning on hosting numerous events open to both students and the general public. According to Dr. Elizabeth Markle, Prim Library Director and founder of the Poetry Center, “We want to engage the community in poetry. We’d like to be able to do workshops in schools periodically, using students or poets who are brought in. We would like poetry writing workshops. Ashley Staron, Truckee Elementary Kindergarten teacher and a Sierra Nevada College M.Ed. alumna, was selected as the 4th 2014 Truckee Hometown SEARS-Sierra Sun/North Tahoe Bonanza Teacher of the Year finalist. Truckee Elementary principal Valerie Simpson said that Ashley “…has brought her positive energy and new ideas that not only have infiltrated her kindergarten team but the entire school”, and one nominator said that “I have never met a more dedicated teacher”. Congratulations Ashley!
The Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science (MS)2, Washington, DC, is presently conducting a search for a new principal. Anne Marie Eby was the winner of the 2013 M.Ed. Academic Achievement Award for her action plan, Picture This! A Visual-Spatial Approach to Learning. She won $5,000 to implement her action plan at her school, Martha P. King Elementary School. Congratulations, Anne, for a job well done!
