Learning Multimedia Journalism at SNC

Since become a Journalism major and immersing myself in the program here at SNC, I’ve learned a thing or two about the ins and outs of writing successful, engaging stories.

Last semester, I took a class called Beginning Multimedia Journalism. I didn’t know what to expect, but in an increasingly technology-driven society, I knew it would be essential material to learn.

In the beginning class, we learned how to incorporate multiple types of media into journalism, such as digital, video, and audio media. We learned how to use Audacity, Google Maps, iMovie, Photoshop, and other programs to implement multimedia into our articles.

I enjoyed the class and decided to take Intermediate Multimedia Journalism this semester. Tanya, my teacher, created curriculum for me and the one other intermediate student, and geared the class as an independent study. We decided what we would focus our multimedia skills on, created a spreadsheet of our hours spent working for Tanya to review. We would also come into the beginner multimedia class every other week to share some insight with the beginner students and help post articles to the Eagle’s Eye website.

This semester, through Intermediate Multimedia Journalism, I have furthered my skills and created some impressive work to show for it. I decided to gear my learning towards social media by taking over the ODAL facebook page and making posts throughout the week. I also created blog posts (like this one!), worked with Rosie Hackett on other ODAL social media initiatives, took Google Analytics courses, and created an online portfolio to showcase my journalism work.

As my final project, I created a multimedia story using Readymag, an online web publication software. Here’s how it turned out:


I’m extremely proud with how far I’ve come, both in this class and at SNC. The journalism program, thanks to its amazing faculty, has transformed me from a timid writer to a confident journalist. I couldn’t be happier with my education here at SNC.

What I learned from a Multimedia Story

 Ivory Wars: Last Stand in Zakouma by Michael Nichols

I really liked the way the multimedia story Last Stand in Zakouma told the horrific situation happening currently in Africa. It was a story of elephants, and how they are brutally killed just for their horns, that the locals can sell for high price. I think that this is a very horrible situation for both, locals and the elephants. The people killing these animals are obviously poor, and by killing elephants they can bring food for their family. I still believe that there has to be another way to make a living than killing endangered species. I felt so bad looking at the audioslide show, showing all these elephants, having their head chopped to pieces, just to get their horns. They are left exactly at that place they were shot down, to rot.

This multimedia story, really expressed feelings effectively and I bet that if everyone would share this story, people would start noticing and wanting to make a difference towards better. I’m touched by this story, and that’s what a multimedia story I believe is about. By adding video, photos and audio, these storytellers really made the viewer feel more involved with the story. Especially when they showed elephant Annie’s journey around Africa, and how she got killed.

I think I’m going to try to tell my Multimedia Story more with video and audio, because now I only have few videos and a lot of photos. Audio definitely adds more emotion and allows to express feelings. This story really makes me want to jump on a plane to Africa and save the Elephants, which was probably the point that the storytellers wanted.


Multimedia Journalism Class covers English Pizza Party

Cameras and flashes were going off from every angle. Cell phones and DSLRs were held in the air documenting stretchy pizza strands and raised glasses. The multimedia journalism class took a field trip to cover the English Department Pizza Party, Oct. 30, at DiMaggio’s Pizza. They spread the news via Social Media, audio interviews, photo slideshows, and Audio Soundslides. Check out their work here.
